The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published its findings for 2011.  While global total filings are increasing (2.13 million patents/ 4.2 million trademarks), China now files the most patent and trademark applications in the world.  France is responsible for the largest number of repeat patents being filed for the same technology in different parts of the world.  China has the least number of repeat patents.  Its IP growth remains on Chinese territory.  One implication from these results is that Chinese patents are less valuable for protecting local inventors for world-wide exploitation.  This may be due to the relative importance of the patent process to the exploitation of the technology or it may be due to the relative importance of the technology itself.
